Ok let's back it up from last week’s post. If you missed it, read it here. To understand Apple Photos, we need to cover some of the key features including albums.

Apple Photos:

Apple Photos is a complete photo management and organization application developed by Apple. It's designed to help you manage, edit, and share your photos and videos across your Apple devices. Here are some key features of Apple Photos:

  • Photo Library: This is the central location where all your photos and videos are stored. It includes your entire collection, from the oldest to the most recent content.
  • Organization: Uses AI-driven features to automatically organize your content based on factors like location, date, and facial recognition (the absolute best). This makes it easier to search for specific photos without manual sorting. (For example, if I want a photo of my husband and me at Christmas I type in our names, and 12/25...boom!)
  • Editing Tools: The app offers a range of editing tools to enhance your photos. You can adjust colors, apply filters, crop, and even make more advanced edits if desired.
  • Shared Albums: You can create shared albums to collaborate with friends and family. People you invite can add their own photos, creating a collaborative photo album.
  • Memories: It automatically generates "Memories," which are curated collections of related photos and videos, often accompanied by music and animations.
And my most favorite feature
  • Search: The powerful search feature allows you to find photos using keywords, locations, dates, and even objects recognized within the images.

Albums:

Albums are a specific organizational feature within Apple Photos. Here's how they differ from the broader Apple Photos application:

  • Custom Organization: Albums are like virtual folders where you can manually organize and group-specific photos and videos. This allows you to create thematic collections or group content by event, topic, or any other criteria you choose.
  • Control: Albums give you precise control over how you organize and present your photos. You decide which content goes into each album.
  • Non-Destructive: Creating albums doesn't duplicate your photos. Instead, it creates pointers to the original photos in your library, helping you save storage space.
  • Presentation: You can arrange the order of photos within albums, making it easy to create visual stories or sequences.
  • Offline Access: Albums can be downloaded to your device for offline viewing, which is useful when you want to access specific content without an internet connection.

My Favorite Albums:

  • Things to remember
  • Best of each member of the family
  • Projects
  • Travel
  • Funnies
  • Pick me ups

To sum it up.... Apple Photos is the overarching application that encompasses your entire photo and video collection, offering organization, editing, and sharing features. Albums are a subset of this app, allowing you to manually organize and group-specific photos and videos based on your preferences. Think of Apple Photos as the toolbox and Albums as one of the tools within it to help you keep your memories organized and accessible.

Stay tuned for the last part of the series, Part 3: Albums vs. Shared Albums.
